Debra Weiner

I am a writer, poet, and entrepreneur and enjoy the contrast of my double life. I own and manage a successful communications company that allows me to wake up and invent something new everyday. My favorite place in the world is Rome, where I hope to continue my writing on the Aventine hill. My second favorite place is now Berlin, and I would be equally as happy having my living room nestled somewhere in Prenzlauer Berg.

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I lead a bit of a double life. By day, I am a managing partner of a healthcare communications company that produces (among other things) PAINWeek, which has become the largest US medical conference on pain management.

Describe your book ‘How to Recognize Your Future Ex-Husband’ in 30 words or less.

It is a field guide for navigating through the first few weeks and months of dating. Essentially, it deals with the “R” word, i.e., rationalization how it can lead us to make unhappy choices. For a broader explanation, please refer to a recent Huffington Post blog: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/debra-weiner/how-to-recognize-your-fut_b_933090.html

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Finishing it. I began writing it several years ago after working with a very gifted therapist. I put it aside, and when I returned to it, I rewrote it and added personal vignettes, which I think makes it more interesting and impactful.

What books have had the greatest influence on you?

How to Be Your Own Best Friend, The Brothers Karamazov, Zelda, Spiritual Cannibalism, Nicholas & Alexandra, Italian Days, Just Kids.

Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

I have a blog and as noted above, I have blogged for the Huffington Post, which garnered a great deal of attention for the book. I should be doing more guest blogging, but haven’t had the time. I have also been approached by different groups to do online Webinars, which I am interested in pursuing.

How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

Cooking, reading, and traveling.

What are you working on next?

I am working on a film adaptation of my book, along with a novel, and a poetry manuscript, Naked in the Antarctic.
