JD Combs

I'm a newly self-published author who survives day-to-day life with my three kids by drinking cup after cup of hot tea. I'm a hot mess of a mama who tries so hard to be angelic and perfect. I work so hard to be mild mannered swim mom by day, but I turn into a kick ass hockey mama at night. I try to fit my writing in between while learning to live with a tarnished halo and broken angel's wing.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I've always enjoyed writing and reading as a form of escape from reality.  In high school I was an avid reader and my journal overflowed with the typical teenage angst.  I'm a bit afraid to go back and read what I've written but I hope someone, someday,  will take my journals and glean something from them.  I went on to study broadcast journalism in college.  I interned for a newspaper and that is when I fell in completely in love with telling other people's stories.  It's taken me a while to come to a time in  my life where I can take the time I need to write and write and write some more.  I began a blog almost four years ago about life raising kids.  And now, I'm a mom of three teenagers.  My oldest is a senior in high school, getting ready to leave the nest for the first time.  I adore being a mom so this is an extremely bittersweet time for me.  I've raised these kids with the knowledge that they will grow up and go on to lead lives on their own but the time has come so fast to see the first one getting ready to head off into the big wide world.  But it's also my time to make my mark a little bigger than "just" having raised three kids.

2. Describe your book ‘The Point of No Return’ in 30 words or less.

The Point of No Return is an edgy book that delves into how social media plays a part in our lives and can lead us into lies, betrayal, lust and possibly back to true love.

3. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

The hardest part of writing my book was digging into a life of infidelity and betrayal.  Getting into the head of someone who leads a life of deceit was difficult, to say the least.

4. What books have had the greatest influence on you?

Gone with the Wind was my all time favorite book as a young woman.  I think I must have read it three or four times.  I loved the history, the romance and the trials and tribulations Scarlett O'Hara faced in her young life.  In college, The Handmaid's Tale was a book that left an incredible mark on me, making me cringe at the thought of living a life like the one told in the Handmaid's story.

5. Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

I use all forms of social media to market my book, although I don't think I'm doing a terribly good job at promoting it well.

6. How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

When I'm not writing I can either be found on the tennis courts playing the game I love, on a lacrosse field watching my oldest defend his goalie, in a hockey rink watching my middle child skate up and down the ice trying to score a goal or at a swimming pool watching my youngest race her heart out. I also enjoy spending lazy afternoons with my husband, which are few and far between, and I love cooking up new recipes in the kitchen.

7. What are you working on next?

Right now I'm working on a book called The Blue Suitcase.  It's a love story told through letters between a military spouse and her soldier husband.  As soon as that is at the editor I will finish the sequel to The Point of No Return.
