David Chaloner

For nearly 25 years I have worked in a variety of settings- residential rehabs, government and health agencies and private practice as well as teaching in the field of addictive processes, dependencies and motivation. ASK is a distillation of some of the key things i have learned about this area from clients, students and fellow travellers. It is meant as a trigger or catalyst for further action

Interview

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

DAVID CHALONER. AUTHOR, THERAPIST, TEACHER.

The things above describe me as far as they go. I am also a father, partner, Grandad, addiction recoverer, sport lover, blues and classical music listener and avid reader.

2. Describe your book ‘ASK Addiction Survival Kit: Walking Back To Yourself’ in 30 words or less.

My book ASK Addiction Survival Kit is a primer, a list of clues, a start point for anyone affected by addictive processes either as the awakening sufferer, or by default, the person suffering because of someone else’s addiction- partner, family member, employer or colleague. A new way into understanding what the world already thinks it knows.

3. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

The hardest part in writing the book was to simplify it so anyone opening it at any page might find something to help, or promote thought, or a new way of perceiving the problem. There is so much ‘out there’ about the problems; so how to cut through to the important issues and leave a lasting impression- that was the hardest thing: to be simple, not simplistic and to convey that one can enter the challenge from anywhere.

4. What books have had the greatest influence on you?

The most influential books in my life:
‘The Human Condition’ by Thomas Keating.
‘Siddhartha’ Hermann Hesse
‘Original Self’  Thomas Moore.
‘Mans search for Meaning’ Viktor Frankl.
‘Shane’ Jack Schaefer.
‘Memories, Dreams and Reflections’ Carl Jung

5. Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

I am marketing my book through Freado, Indietribe, PRfor Books and working hard to understand this world of publishing.

6. How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

When I am not writing I am working as a Therapist and developing an online presence and always striving to make a difference with the gifts I have been given.

7. What are you working on next?

My next project is a broader perspective of my work in the Addictive Processes field and how people and societies are changed by awareness and new ways of becoming.
