S.M. McEachern

S.M. McEachern (also known as Susan) comes from the rocky shores of Canada’s East Coast. As a resident of Halifax during her early adult years, she attended Dalhousie University and earned an Honors Degree in International Development Studies with a focus on ocean development. Throughout her academic studies and early career, Susan had the privilege to study and work with Elizabeth Mann Borgese (daughter of nobel prize winner, Thomas Mann). An author in her own right and a political activist for world peace, Mrs. Mann Borgese played a significant influence on Susan’s view of the political world stage.

Now a mother of two and the wife of one (who is serving overseas), Susan currently resides in Canada’s capital city of Ottawa. She loves delicious hot beverages, wine and talking about herself in the third person. For writing inspiration, Susan likes to go on long walks with her iPod (Keane and Moby are among her favorites). “Sunset Rising” is her debut novel. The second book of the series, "Worlds Collide" was released on Amazon March 4, 2014.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

For one thing, I don’t like talking about myself…that said, here goes  Once upon a time, I thought I would grow up to be a journalist, but deviated off that path to study and work in the field of International Development. I have no regrets. Working with people from so many different countries was an amazing, life changing experience that really influenced who I am today. And although I loved my career, I married a military man and soon found myself moving all over Canada (he was posted every two years!) and, at one point, across the pond to England. We have two daughters and I think it’s very cool that they’ve had the opportunity to travel so much as well. They have good friends all over the world.

2. Describe your book Sunset Rising in 30 words or less.

Accused of treason and forced into hiding, natural born enemies Sunny O’Donnell and Jack Kenner must work together not only to survive, but also lead the revolution.

3. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

The hardest part was just getting started. “Sunset Rising” was my first novel, so prior to writing it I wasn’t really an “author.” When I approached that first blank page, intent on making it come alive with characters in a world of my own making, I did so with a lot of insecurities. But once I typed out a few words and those words began to form sentences and those sentences flowed into a story, it got interesting and I forgot to be scared. I forgot that I wasn’t author.

4. What books have had the greatest influence on you?

I love reading all kinds of books, but the stories that I really get lost in usually have a strong political theme. To name a few: “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” by Louis de Bernières, “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak, and “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins.

5. Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

I like to do book blasts with bloggers, giveaways and, when I reduce the price of the book for short periods of time, advertise with Bookbub and Book Gorilla.

6. How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

By grabbing life and living it! lol! I’m not one to sit in front of a tv. If I’m sitting, it’s because I’m either reading or writing. Otherwise, I’m out hiking, running, boating, snorkeling, travelling, or spending time with friends. I have two busy daughters—one is a competitive swimmer and the other in martial arts—who keep me running too.

7. What are you working on next?

I’m currently writing the third book in the “Sunset Rising” series, which is the last book for the initial trilogy focused on Sunny and Jack. However, it doesn’t mean it’s the “last” book for the world I’ve built ;)
