Description

Going from raunchy to redeemed is not easy. When 19 year old prostitute Sofia Douglas walks into Freedom Baptist to reconcile with her mentally abusive foster mother Julia Aaron, she is met with much more than she bargained for.

Although befriended by an elderly church mother by the name of Ruth Stills, she begins to fall for Ruth’s son Xavier who is handsome, caring, a minister… and married. Sofia begins an endless cycle of trying to stifle mutual feelings for a married man of God, and combat the bitterness of a mother who has her own issues, both spiritually and psychologically.

With the arrival of the mysterious Sofia walks at the last night of revival, Xavier Stills and Felecia's already troubled marriage takes a tumultuous turn for the worst. Felecia and Xavier now have to fight to save their diminishing relationship, even as they try to ward off the temptation of yielding to outside influences.

This is the first book I have read by Alvetta Rolle and I will surely be back for more. This story is not in my usual genre, but I sure did like it. Rolle is a wonderful character crafter. This story really gets in deep under the skin and into the souls of the characters. It made me cry more than once.

The themes of this book are: trust in your abilities, trust in others, but above all, trust in the Lord. An amazing story with an amazing purpose. The Mercy Seat is a page-turner from beginning to the end. And for those who crave romance, the electricity between Xavier and Sofia will keep you guessing.

This review is from: The Mercy Seat (The Freedom Baptist Trilogy) (Paperback)
This was an awesome book! Didn't expect this from a first time author. The emotions displayed within the work was amazing. It touched all all facets of forgiveness. that between a parent and child, leaders and servants, and husbands and wives. we have to be careful to holding on to things like that. Rolle did a good job with this. I hear this is going to be a trilogy! I can hardly wait for the next release!! This is a MUST read if you like clean, drama filled, Christian fiction that isn't "churchy" or "too preachy". It has incredible detail and balance

The author did an excellent job pulling you in every direction. I had my feelings about Xaviar's marriage but this book definitely stresses on obedience.

I felt so sorry for Sofia. That poor girl couldn't seem to get a break. I liked Xaviar's wife even less for her jealousy and malice. Church folks! lol

Ruth was definitely a rock. Wish we could all run into someone who doesn't care about our past and accepts us for the person that they see. It unnerved me when Xaviar tried to have an attitude about Sofia's past. Then, had the nerve to ask her why she didn't tell him. Who would tell such a thing when entering a new circle?

I'm glad Julia finally listened to that still voice. People try so hard to live for status on the outside...and are miserable on the inside.

I can't say too much without giving away the story. This book is a must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! Urban Christian Fiction at its best, July 13, 2012

This review is from: The Mercy Seat (The Freedom Baptist Trilogy) (Paperback)
This book was not a long read, but it was engaging and I enjoyed every moment. The main character, Sofia, is a reformed prostitute who finds the strength to change her path, even without the support of the one woman she'd expected it from. Overall the plot was sound and I look forward to seeing if this author does more with these characters or if she writes anything new.

I really enjoyed the Mercy Seat. It was about a young girl named Sofia who got kicked out at a young age by her adoptive mother. She had to do what she had to do to survive. Finally she found her way back to the church. Her mother happened to be a member of that church. She was judged harshly, but she kept coming back. In my opinion church members treat you worst than the people who's of the world. The only thing that I didn't like about Sofia was that she acted like she couldn't get a regular job. The pastor of the church gave her a temporary job to help her get on her feet, but when he said that the job was over she felt like she had to go back to her old life style instead of just getting a regular job. Anyway I really enjoyed the book and God truly does have Mercy on us.
