Description

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Prov 31:1

Once an awkward girl of Hebron who seemed to follow trouble, Acsah blossoms into a beautiful, sought after woman of God. Amidst the turmoil of work and war, Acsah finds herself struggling between following her heart and trusting the guidance of both her earthly and heavenly Father. She must trust the armies of Judah under the Patriarch, Caleb, to protect herself and those she holds dear.

After losing his father in a tragic animal attack, Othniel has felt the weight of war and duty more heavily than most his age. His growing attraction to Acsah is a confusing distraction from his plans as Captain, yet he finds himself unable to turn his thoughts and heart from her.

Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land. Prov 31:23

When Acsah's father decrees that whoever can take the city of Debir will be her husband, their doubts and fears threaten to overwhelm. Will Othniel prove his worth by taking the city of Debir and thus, Acsah's hand in marriage? Or will he fail in his quest and watch as she be given to another? It all comes down to faith and trust in One greater than all of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting take on this woman of the Bible, October 15, 2012
This review is from: Acsah (Paperback)
This story is based on the Biblical character of Acsah found in the book Joshua. This women is given in marriage by her father Caleb to the man who could win a certain battle. This fictional recounting of the story takes many liberties. Since not much is written the author has added much to make this an interesting story.

I gave this book 4/5 stars. I thought it was a bit wordy. There was too much description and internal thoughts. That said, I still enjoyed the story. I thought the author did well at portraying the emotions of the characters. I liked the conversations and setting descriptions. I think anyone who is interested in Biblical fiction will enjoy the book.

I would like to thank the publisher for the copy of this book I enjoyed reading. I gave an honest review based on my opinion of what I read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put the book down, January 2, 2013

This review is from: Acsah (Paperback)
I've been waiting to purchase this book when it came out on Kindle! It finally did and I bought it right away. I finished reading the book in just a few days as I couldn't put it down. I love how the author took a small portion of scripture and expanded on it in this fictional book. A book full of insights into Jewish customs and traditions of that time but also with some modern lingo and verbage. It was a great combination of action and love! There is also a great message thread throughtout the book of abstinence and staying pure until marriage. I think anyone with a teenager should have them read this book! Looking forward to another book by Janice Rice!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting & Unique Take on a Christian Romance Story, November 26, 2012

This review is from: Acsah (Paperback)
I love this unique story about Acsah! I haven't read anything similar on this particular woman, but it is a great re-imagining and I found it believable and endearing. It reminds me of Francine Rivers books, except this author went the unknown route rather than rehashing well-known stories. Highly recommend, brava!

This review is from: Acsah (Paperback)
Acsah has four older brothers and wants to do everything they do including hunt, train for battle, herd sheep, and fight in battle to protect her people. She is 11 going on 20! Her father, Caleb, who is the leader of their city as well, grants her requests usually as she is his youngest child and he dotes on her. Her mother tries to teach her to do more womanly tasks with disastrous results. She enjoys the outdoors and often sings her praises to the Lord while at her tasks. She usually tends sheep with her favorite cousin Othniel. He is four years older than she. He has always held a special place in her heart. Her brothers and cousins are protective of her and do their best to keep her safe. As she grows older, she turns into a beautiful young woman. She is the model of virtue with a spotless reputation. Many of the young men notice her and are only waiting until she is old enough for marriage to court her. Her heart belongs to someone already though, and she longs for the day when he will realize her feelings toward him and hopefully the same feelings in himself for her. She understands the need for battle to gain The Promised Land the Lord has promised His people, but she is tired of seeing the men in her life that she loves ride off to fight in battle not knowing if they will return.
Othniel works all day as a farmer, then trains in the evenings to be a soldier. When he was younger, he tended sheep with his cousin Acsah. He has always had a tender spot in his heart for her, but they are just friends, right? He works his way up to command a group of soldiers. He has kept himself chaste for his future wife. One day after returning from another battle, he sees a beautiful young woman getting water from the well. When she turns around, he sees that it is Acsah. When did she grow up? He soon realizes he has feelings for her beyond friendship. Does she feel the same? He decides to court her when she comes of age, but soon realizes there are others with the same plan. How can he win her hand? He can't bear the thought of her marrying someone else. His uncle Caleb, Acsah's father, issues a decree that whoever takes the city of Debir for the Jews will also win the hand of his daughter Acsah in marriage. Can Othniel put his strategy to use to win the city and Acsah? Will his best friend's brother, Ahijah, be the winner? Ahijah has publically proclaimed his love for Acsah, so he has much at stake in the upcoming battle. Othniel puts his faith in the Lord and trusts Him as to the outcome.
The author has taken a somewhat unknown scripture and produced an enjoyable, interesting fictional story. The relationship she portrays between Caleb and Acsah is particularly touching. The faith in every area of the lives of this particular group of Jews is encouraging.
