Dr. Selznick has consulted withthousands of families over the years on the issues related to The Shut-Down Learner-Helping Your Academically Discouraged Child. Included in the book are numerous case studies drawn from vast professional experiences.

As Director of the Cooper Learning Center, Dr. Selznick oversees aprogram that assesses and treats a broad range of learning andschool-based academic and behavioral problems. The Cooper LearningCenter is a Division of the Department of Pediatrics, of CooperUniversity Hospital. The Hospital is a leading teaching hospital in theregion. The Cooper Learning Center was established byDr. Selznick within the Pediatric Department in 1995. It is the leadingprogram in the region offering a variety of different services,including parent and teacher training along with its clinical practice.

Dr. Selznick additionally works as a school consultant, and is askedto lecture frequently to parents and teachers on a variety of differenttopics. Throughout the year, Dr. Selznick speaks to numerous parentgroups through schools, regional conferences, and lectures at CooperUniversity Hospital and the newly established Cooper Center for Women.Popular topics of Dr. Selznick’s include: “Myth’s & Realities ofDyslexia,” “Dealing With Bullying: Is Your Child a Shark or SharkMeat,” “Parenting Dilemmas: Regaining Control of the Ship,” “ManagingYour ADHD in College,” among many others. In the spring of 2007, Dr.Selznick spoke to over 200 teachers on the topic of the Shut- DownLearner and the signs to notice in early childhood. Known forpresenting with humor and a down to earth style, Dr. Selznick offershis audience an enjoyable experience, with practical and veryapplicable strategies for the challenging issues they are faced withtheir children.
