Description

The absorbing, definitive account of CrossFit's origins, its explosive grassroots growth, and its emergence as a global phenomenon.

One of the most illuminating books ever on a sports subculture, Learning to Breathe Fire combines vivid sports writing with a thoughtful meditation on what it means to be human. In the book, veteran journalist J.C. Herz explains the science of maximum effort, why the modern gym fails an obese society, and the psychic rewards of ending up on the floor feeling as though you're about to die.

The story traces CrossFit’s rise, from a single underground gym in Santa Cruz to its adoption as the workout of choice for elite special forces, firefighters and cops, to its popularity as the go-to fitness routine for regular Joes and Janes. Especially riveting is Herz’s description of The CrossFit Games, which begin as an informal throw-down on a California ranch and evolve into a televised global proving ground for the fittest men and women on Earth, as well as hundreds of thousands of lesser mortals.

In her portrayal of the sport's star athletes, its passionate coaches and its “chief armorer,” Rogue Fitness, Herz powerfully evokes the uniqueness of a fitness culture that cultivates primal fierceness in average people. And in the shared ordeal of an all-consuming workout, she unearths the ritual intensity that's been with us since humans invented sports, showing us how, on a deep level, we're all tribal hunters and first responders, waiting for the signal to go all-out.

Story Behind The Book

You can have it all! With the release of my second and third novels, I figured it would be good idea to bundle them into a trilogy. I mean, why buy books one at a time when you can have them all for one low price? Now you can read my contemporary romance novels, “Distracted,” “East of Eaton” and “West Wind” as an easy-to-read — and even easier to pay for and download — eBook. There’s also a paperback version for folks who want to hold the book, but the savings aren’t there. There’s too much infrastructure to pay for with print-on-demand, which is why I love my eBooks. The reason I’ve collected these three books into the trilogy is because the next set will be dark stories with suspense and mystery and murder. Oh yeah, there’s still lots of kissing going on, as well as other stuff, so the upcoming series are still romance novels.

In her first book we meet a new breed of women they are strong, independent, women of the world except when it comes to the ways of the heart, and the struggles each met and overcome to find true love. I love the way her books entwine with each other, some giving you a glimps into a future one or a reminder of one previously read. While I enjoyed reading her first book Distracted, I found that once I started her second one East of Eaton I could not put it down until I finished. The third and final one West Wind had all the elements one looks for in a light romance novel. It's quite refreshing to see strong leading women who know what that want and take steps to achieve their goals both in love, family, and careers. I can not wait to see what Madeline has in store for us next. Women of Eaton: Trilogy
