From the start of his journey, Kai experiences ominous symptoms, which he refuses to acknowledge. Kai experiences his first shapeshift into a were-leopard, and his world spirals out of control when he discovers that he isn’t completely human – leading him towards an internal struggle with his new-found anatomy. His inability to stay away from Sienna soon leads him towards a dangerous path, for disobeying the unwritten rules of the shapeshifting kind, forbidding them from falling in love a human. This leads Kai towards a fight for his life, and he learns that he has to find it within himself to protect everyone that he loves, or lose them to the wrath of the god of the underworld and magic.

This story is told from the teen hero's perspective. Kai is a strong character that finds out something about himself that changes his whole world. Kai is someone, or something different than he thought he was. As he figures out the secret of his true identity, and his lost father, new evils and other world creatures become a part of his life. Author Leandi Cameron has created a world full of powerful Gods and supernatural creatures. I was excited to read this book about Shape-shifters. If they fall in love with a human, the powerful and evil God Quinn, will destroy that love by killing their human lover/mate. There is a legend behind this evil villain's actions, too long to put here. You will have to read the book to find out more.

Kai and Sienna are a great couple whose love goes through many ups and downs.I like them together and how they truly fought for each other and for their love. The ending is quite shocking, but thrilling. It's nice to read a YA Paranormal book that has some new twists written in. This book will be enjoyed by older teens(ages 14+) and adults. I wouldn't recommend this to tweens or middle grade readers(ages 8-13) because of some violence and bad language. Everyone else will love this story full of action, romance, and sacrifice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just look at that cover!, December 28, 2012

By

Tanjlisa Marie "Fictionholic" (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

This review is from: A Tale of the Other Kind: A Therian Novel (Kindle Edition)
COVER: The cover draws you in. It is sensual, mysterious, and gives you an idea of what’s to come.
CHARACTERS: The characters in this story were profound and realistic. Kai, the protagonist, came across as the sexy loner. He was respectful and thank God he wasn’t a pushover (I despise pushover good guys!). In a couple of scenes he got into fights and took up for his woman (way to go, Kai!). Sienna, Kai’s love interest, was no shrinking violet. Although Kai comes to her rescue more than once in the book, she shows him that she can take care of herself. Astrid, the sidekick, adds flavor to all the scenes she’s in. I liked her character best of all.
CONFLICT: So, Kai finds out that there’s something other-worldly weird about him. He tries to stay away from the girl he loves in order to protect her. Of course that proves futile and even when others tell him to stay away, he ignores all the warnings. Because of this forbidden love, Kai has caused the wrath of a jealous god to be cast upon him and all his loved ones. Does he give up his love or does he fight for his right to party? I thought it took a little long to get to the conflict. A lot of time was spent with the James-and-Sienna fight that I thought it would be super significant in some way.
VILLAIN: To me, the villain makes the story. They have the all-rights pass to be as bad as they want to be. I find it interesting how each writer takes advantage of this opportunity to project evil genius into characters. I had high hopes for Quinn, the jealous god who doesn’t want any non-human to fall in love with a human. When he first entered the story, he grabbed me with his line, “Things could be easy for you Kai. You should refrain from being seduced by that which you are so eager to indulge in.” I was like, yes, there’s the bad guy! He sounded wickedly classy. But then we don’t hear from him until waaayyy later in the story! I would have liked to see more of him. He did kill for no reason, increasing his diabolical rating. The ultimate-battle fight scene should have had more Quinn showing off his villainy skills.
ENDING: There’s nothing worse than going through a story only to be let down at the end. That was not the case with this story. I did think Kai changed his mind too easily at the end. Given his character, it would have seemed more realistic if he struggled more with whether or not he wanted to continue putting the love of his life in constant danger. But overall, I really enjoyed the story! The journey was good and the climax appropriate. Can’t wait to read the second installment!
Tanjlisa’s Rating System: Pretending to clap, Pity clap, Medium clap, Enthusiastic applause, Standing ovation
I give A Tale of the Other Kind an Enthusiastic applause. I enjoyed it and will read the second installment!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Read!, December 21, 2012

By

Brandy C - See all my reviews

This review is from: A Tale of the Other Kind: A Therian Novel (Kindle Edition)
I loved this story so much! A shape shifting were-leopard?! How awesome! I fell in love with Kai from the beginning. Leandi did an excellent job of creating this beautifully complex and devastatingly handsome character from the beginning.

There was good pacing throughout the book. I only came across a couple of slow parts but it didn't take away from the overall story. I loved all the characters and how well they were developed. The story itself is super unique. I much prefer reading about were-leopards than werewolves  You should definitely get this book, it's an easy read and really fun story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind-Blowing, December 3, 2012

By

Andrea Kurian "Mommy Adventures with Ravina" (Reading, England) - See all my reviews

This review is from: A Tale of the Other Kind: A Therian Novel (Kindle Edition)
This is so much more than "just a book". A few clicks on the author's website plus recognising the background work that has been done for this book is simply mind-blowing. There are self-published authors who couldn't give a tuppence about what gets to their readers and then you have authors like Leandi who pour their lives into their work. The end result? An absolutely stunning masterpiece.

The conflicts raised for each character doesn't seem to overflow to the entire story. I felt that these conflicts were somewhat compartmentalized which worked really well for this book. I loved it also that the entire story was from the hero's perspective. You see him fall, rise and then fall a bit more. Every line and page of this book will have you spellbound. Be it from the story, setting, writing or simply the combination of all these elements. Although, Leandi has created a whole new world within the pages of this book, there is a strong cultural strength that I fell in love with. Again, maybe it was her attention to detail but you will not step away from this book without at least one scenic image planted in your head.

Would I recommend this read? Oh yes, definitely.

Overall assessment:
Content: 5/5
Editing: 5/5
Formatting: 5/5
Pacing: 5/5
Offensive content?: PG13 to PG15, mostly for theme and content.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!!!! The thing that surprised as I was reading it, is that the cover is the least awesome thing about this book. I was blown away. The story is set in the beautiful mountain range and forest-covered area of Sabie, in Mpumalanga, South Africa. Since this is written by a South African author, be prepared for non-American English in both spelling and punctuation. I did not find this to be the least bit distracting once I realized the different quotation markings. This also means that we get a true feeling of what the climate, landscape and culture of this area.

The combination of these amazingly rich characters and the unique lore all within this amazing backdrop of Sabie made this tale spellbinding. I could not put it down and was sad when it was over. While there is a romance in this book, this book is so much more than a romance novel and seeing it tagged as romance on Amazon makes me hope that people will see past the tagging and check out this gem even if "romance" novels are not their "thing". That being said, if you love romance, this book surely has that covered for you.

It was nice to read a YA book that was more focused on the hero than the heroine. Seeing him as he struggled with who is is and who he is to become was part of the magic of this book. I am very much looking forward to the next book in this series. I have not seen what the release date is expected to be, but it is said to be in production, so that makes me happy. While this is YA, I am leaning towards it being YA Mature for a 16 plus audience.

Extremely entertaining 5/5

FROM AMAZON:
This review is from: A Tale of the Other Kind: A Therian Novel (Volume 1) (Paperback) I found this book compelling from the start. It is quite refreshing to read about how Cameron created an entire new world and way of thinking surrounding shapeshifters, vampires, were-leopards and all other fantasical beings we love to read.
I fell in love with the protagonist from the get-go, and hoped for his part that he would get the girl. I, too, found Astrid to be a compelling character, and I foresee much more for her and Kai in the future. Can't wait for the follow up!
