About the Author

Melinda Bohannon graduated from Fresno State in 1994 with a BA in Liberal Studies and became a teacher. For many years, she worked with troubled teenagers and their families. In 2004 her family began working with foster children. Melinda has been writing novels to entertain and inspire her church, friends, students, and family for over a decade.

Melinda Bohannon graduated from Fresno State in 1994 with a BA in Liberal Studies and became a teacher. For many years, she worked with troubled teenagers and their families. In 2004 her family began working with foster children. Melinda has spoken to groups of foster parents and recovery groups on matters of dealing with troubled children. She has been writing novels to entertain and inspire her church, friends, students, and family for over a decade.

"Inner Society" by Melinda Louise Bohannon tells the story of Maggie Kraus, a girl from the wrong side of town, a poor kid. Her father lost direction and crawled into a bottle after her mother died four years before the start of the book. Maggie, it turns out, was in the car when her mother died in an accident. She and her dad wind up living in a modest home in a very wealthy part of Norfolk, Va. Maggie's uncle, their landlord, insists — that as part of his allowing them to live there and pay reduced rent — his niece attend the district's very exclusive school. He wants to brag that he has a relative enrolled there. Maggie hates it immediately. She dresses trashy, wears her died black hair in a messy pony tail and isn't afraid to share her bad attitude with the rich kids who immediately brand her an outsider and begin quietly taunting her relentlessly. She discovers she's an economic minority, and that most of the student body is handsome, almost too much so, and awash in money. But Bohannon said she didn't want to tell a story that's been rehashed many times either on television or in books. She wanted something different. And while "Inner Society" crackles with the appropriate Christian themes like forgiveness and redemption, it also hurtles along with the pacing of a thriller. And the protagonist is hit with one conflict after another, forcing her to react and taking the story into unexpected directions. Maggie encounters one tragedy after another. But while she succeeds at somehow extricating herself from many of her scrapes, she handles many badly, making mistakes at every turn. Her flaws and split-second decisions often cause Maggie nothing but disaster. She's a trainwreck, but she's trying to figure it out. Bohannon said she had an emphasis in psychology while pursuing her degree at Fresno State and did a lot of counseling while working with troubled teens. She said Maggie is a composite but added, "I'm sure a lot of characteristics did come from me." She described herself as a rebel growing up. "There was always some sort of injustice I was against," she said. Maggie is the ultimate fighter, a girl who has endured more than her share of abuse, tragedy and disappointment. But she struggles to make sense of it all and that new thing she embraced — her faith. This is definitely not my genre, but I did just buy the second book. I interviewed Bohannon for a story and cribbed some of it for this review.

This book, one of three in a teen trilogy, kept me glued down and locked on for a wild rollercoaster ride. With twists, jolts and hairpin turns, the action never stopped. It was riveting, it had depth and it also took a look inside a place one would never want to dream of going. It contained all elements of real life--from the deepest of fear to the most initmate of emotions. It had courage and suspense and every time I thought I could catch my breath, I was on the edge of my seat again. It is a raw look into a place that makes the reader question if what they are reading is real or fiction. The attention to detail is amazing. Melinda Bohannon really did her research when she wrote this novel. Her heart and soul is clearly in the writing. She is a truly talented and gifted author who, I believe, with her message, will bring a new understanding to the multitudes of teenagers (and also adults) who wish to have a better understanding of God's presence in their lives. I could not put the book down. I finished it in a day and a half and cannot wait till part 2!

I heard about this book from a friend of mine. At first I didn't expect all that much out of it. It was something for me to pass the time with. Once I started reading, I found that I was pleasantly surprised at how it gripped me and kept me involved. The plot mixed 2 current issues in todays society; religion and bullying. For me, the story flowed fairly smoothly. There were just a couple of parts that I thought ran a little longer than I wanted but it was mainly because I was dying to see what happened next.

Overall, I would recommend this book to my friends, especially the ones with teenagers. I think this would be a good platform for parents and teenagers to share with each other and to talk about as it would be interesting to see what opinions/topics in this book the parents and their teens differ on.

A great book of division among class and bullying to the extreme. A great example of faith in the face of adversity.
A great friendship that's cut short when one is suddenly and unexpectedly murdered leaving the other completely and utterly alone to face rape, abuse and torture by herself. An alcoholic father that has crawled so far into depression and his booze after the death of his wife forgetting to live for his daughter. Who has suddenly become relying o. Prescription drugs to help with anxiety and depression. She finally tries killing herself one to many times when an old friend she doesn't remember saves her from drowning and sticks her in rehab. After lots of time and many arguments they become dependent on each other and he protected her from the 4 boys who continue to brutally beat and torture her. The love story turns into a sinister plot and a court battle insues . There are car chases train track scenario, cabin in the woods, and shooting at the schools library this book is a definite read very inspiring and soul feeding.

It's well done. But be forewarned... It's very close to horror. The ending barely covers the nastiness.

This story grabs you from the first page and keeps your attention all the way through the book. It is amazing how one teenage girl can go through so many trials and be brave enough to stand up for what is right in the face of danger to herself. Highly recommend reading this book.
