Between Doubt and Belief
The Reluctant Healer tells the story of a young attorney who is torn between mounting evidence that he has the spiritual ability to heal others and his life-long skepticism of alternative views. Will Alexander is cautious and conventional. But when he meets Erica, a beautiful, intense energy healer, he becomes troubled not only by her unorthodox endeavors but also by the limitations of his own existence. Amidst this turmoil, Will is startled to discover that he may possess metaphysical gifts of healing that confront the narrow doctrines of his regulated life.

The Reluctant Healer paints a portrait of a reasonable man who traces a path between skepticism and belief. Flawed, funny, and agnostic, Will distrusts much of the alternative world, even as he struggles internally with phenomena that challenge both his sense of self and his orderly perspective. Will's love for Erica, the exposure to her world, and his newfound powers place his life in a state of uncertainty, teetering between disruption and liberation.

Some years ago, my wife became involved in energy healing and other pursuits, which at first did not resonate with me. As a left-brain-oriented attorney, I found many of her newfound interests and colleagues difficult to relate to and understand. But as I became more exposed to my wife’s new world, I developed an appreciation of her perspective and the perspectives of her colleagues (many of whom are doctors and PhDs). Over time, I began to have stray thoughts about a fictional character, conventional in outlook, becoming involved with someone more spiritually inclined. Much of my initial musing was simply about the tension itself, rather than about a more focused narrative. At some point, a whimsical thought occurred to me, which gradually gained definition: What if the conventional individual, rigid in his beliefs, developed the capability of healing others, even as he distrusted much of the alternative world? His struggle would become poignant and pronounced, because he would be grappling not just with tension in his relationship but also with internal conflict with phenomena that challenged both his sense of self and his worldview.

“The author’s sharply etched characters and smart, observant prose shrewdly capture the ways people think and talk about religious and philosophical issues.”
