About

More than half of all families in the U.S. have a pet. One pet owner, Laurie Kaplan, has made significant contributions to help pet owners take better care of their pets. The story of Laurie and her Siberian Husky, Bullet, has become a legend for all dog lovers.

Laurie’s book, Help Your Dog Fight Cancer: What Every Caretaker Should Know about Canine Cancer, is a crash course on causes, prevention and early detection of canine cancer, diagnosis, treatment, remedies for treatment side effects, supplements and diet. About half of all pets will have cancer in their lifetimes, yet most caretakers know little or nothing about caring for a pet with cancer. When Laurie’s dog, Bullet, was diagnosed with lymphoma, Laurie fought his cancer, generally considered terminal, and saw him survive it. Laurie’s colleagues and veterinarians urged her to write a book to help others fight cancer for their own dogs. The inspirational story of Bullet and Laurie’s journey and their bond is intertwined throughout the book.

Description

FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES

At barely nineteen, Angelica Donovan became one of the more successful winners of the T.V. show Our Next Super Model. The world assumed she was destined for a happy, fairy tale life as ‘Angel,’ the beautiful girl who was living the dream; sadly, that wasn’t to be the case. As the years passed, she flashed her million dollar smile to all her fans and fought to stay on top in a profession where you never knew who it was safe to trust while the fashion industry took big bites out of her heart and soul. And trust was a constant challenge for Angel due to the painful childhood secret she guarded as carefully as she did her heart. As a result, she never did find her true love on earth.

When she wakes up ‘dead’ from a heart condition a month before her thirty-fifth birthday, Angel is at first relieved to find there is no death, just a change of state, like ice to water, and then she’s scared because her biggest and most important adventure is about to begin.

Angelica is chosen to be an angel in training as a spirit guide for three souls on earth! Her assignment is to help two women to gain the courage and confidence to find, recognize and embrace the love that had eluded Angel in life. But her biggest challenge will be to save a very special little girl from the same evil experience that had poisoned Angel’s own earthly happiness and altered the course of her life.

Will Angel be able to heal her own shattered soul in the process? And will the three souls she is guiding be able to recognize her, not as a ghostly threat, but as one of those ‘friends in high places’ we all have; the kind who often end up earning their wings.

Story Behind The Book

I am a medical animal writer. In 2000 I was editor in chief of a pulication called Catnip from Tufts Vet School. And my dog Bullet was diagnosed with lymphoma. Bullet's chemo vet saw all of the things I was doing for Bullet to help him fight cancer in addition to traditional treatment, and he saw how well Bullet was doing. Dr. Porzio convinced me that I HAD TO write a book to help others who had dogs with cancer. So I published this book, which has now helped about 50,000 dog owners whose dogs had cancer. I also started a fund called the Magic Bullet Fund, to help people who can't afford cancer treatment for their dogs. The fund has helped 250 families so far - these dogs would not have been able to have treatment without the fund and the dnoations from people who love dogs. You can donate at themagicbulletfund.org. Dogs with lymphoma must be given chemotherapy or the disease will take them within 4-8 weeks. With chemo, the dogs have a chance to survive 12-18 months. Bullet survived the rest of his life in remission from lymphoma. Bullet survived 4 years and 4 months after his diagnosis. I lost him to kidney failure at the age of 14, still in remission.

Thank you so much for everything you have done for me and Angel. Without you and your book, I do not know what I would have done.
My favorite part of the book and most helpful for me is Chapter 6, Side Effects. Without this section I would probably blow up the vet's phone 24/7, but now, your book has helped me understand so much about Canine Cancer. I catch myself picking it up all the time and rereading sections just because I find them so interesting. The entire book is FANTASTIC.
