A DIFFERENCE OF PURPOSE tells the story of a Confederate drummer boy, serving with the famous Orphan Brigade, and his abolitionist uncle serving with the Union's Irish Brigade. The two confront personal tragedies as the action of the novel takes the reader from theĀ  Battle of Fredericksburg to the largest mass execution (of Indians) in American history, and on to the Battle of Stones River, the central focus of the novel. The characters wrestle with God and with their own inner demons as they search for faith, love and meaning in a torn and tragic world.

The Story Behind This Book

The idea for this book, based on Lincoln's phrase "a difference of purpose", found in the Appendix of the book, occurred to the author over 30 years ago, while he was in law school. A number of drafts have been written over the years during the author's busy years of practice as an attorney.
