Zlotchew is the published author of 17 books, only three of which are his own fiction. His collection of short stories, Once Upon a Decade: Tales of the Fifties, was Finalist in the Next Generation Indie Book Awards, short-story category, 2011. Zlotchew is also a literary critic of Spanish and Latin-American fiction and poetry, a translator of those literatures, and has a book of his interviews with Argentine and Uruguayan writers (including Borges). He's had several books teaching Spanish at various levels published.
Varied Background: Zlotchew joined the U.S. Naval Reserve at age 17 as Apprentice Seaman and was honorably discharged as Chief Petty Officer at age 36. He has been production/sales liaison for the export department of a large liquor manufacturer, has been Coordinator of a New York State funded educational program for Hispanic migrant workers in rural N.Y. He has taught Spanish in high school as well as in several universities. He was honored in 2008 by being named Distinguished Teaching Professor of the State University of New York.
