Tonya Cannariato

A voracious reader since she was a toddler, and an ordained spiritualist, Tonya Cannariato has now presided over the marriage of her love of reading and her love of writing. She’s lived a nomadic life, following first her parents in their Foreign Service career through Africa, Europe, and Asia, and then her own nose criss-crossing America as she’s gotten old enough to make those choices for herself. She’s currently based in Milwaukee with her three loves: her husband and two Siberian Huskies. She suspects her Huskies of mystical alchemy with their joyous liberation of her muse and other magical beings for her inspiration. She loves to sleep, to watch her interesting dreams, some of which are now finding new life in written form.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?
I'm a full-time project manager, full-time Husky mom (we have 3, the youngest of which is currently 4 months old), and part-time writer. We recently relocated to the DC area for my day job, and I finally finished my MBA in December (2014), so I'm very glad to have those hours per night back to being devoted to my fictional worlds.

2. Describe your book Dementional in 30 words or less.
Dementional was born from speculation that the Large Hadron Collider would destroy the planet, and is my answer to the question of "what *would* happen if someone lost a "God particle"?

3. What was the hardest part of writing your book?
I wrote the first draft of the story during my second successful participation in NaNoWriMo, so completing it within 30 days--while still working full time--was an interesting challenge. That said: If I can manage it, there shouldn't be any excuses for other aspiring writers to avoid finding sufficient handfulls of empty minutes to churn out their work, too.

4. What books have had the greatest influence on you?
Anne McCaffrey's Pern series will always retain a place of honor and remain my "happy place" when I need a retreat. That said, Narnia, Hogwarts, and the worlds created by L'Engle, Le Guin, and Briggs each have their homes in my heart as well.

5. Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?
While I do have profiles at

I mostly subscribe to the theory put forth by Dean Wesley Smith that the best marketing is your next book. So while I'm active on Twitter (https://twitter.com/tmycann), check in on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/TonyaCannariato), and obviously have one of my books listed with BookBuzzer, I haven't found any correlation between those activities and book sales. I do see spikes when I put out my next story, so that's where I invest most heavily.

6. How do you spend your time when you are not writing?
Reading. Walking the dogs. Cuddling with my husband. :)

7. What are you working on next?
Now that I don't have papers due for school on a weekly basis, I'm finally back to working on the third book in my Red Slaves trilogy. If I maintain my current plan, it will be released in March.
