Frederick Brooke

Collateral Damage is my third book, and the third book in the Annie Ogden Mystery Series. I'm happiest when I'm reading, and for me writing is a more intense, pure form of reading. I write every morning, and sometimes in the afternoon and evening, too. The most important part of the writing process for me is rewriting. Some authors post their word count on Facebook every day, and I always find it a little strange. Most days my word count is a negative number as I delete and edit.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Frederick Lee Brooke launched the Annie Ogden Mystery Series in 2011 with Doing Max Vinyl and following with Zombie Candy in 2012, a book that is neither about zombies nor sweets. The third mystery in the series, Collateral Damage, appeared in 2013. The first book in Fred’s entirely new series is due in November 2013.
A resident of Switzerland for the last 20 years, Fred has worked as a teacher, language school manager and school owner. He has three boys and two cats and recently had to learn how to operate both washing machine and dryer.
When not writing or doing the washing, Fred can be found walking along the banks of the Rhine River, sitting in a local cafe, or visiting all the local pubs in search of his lost umbrella.

2. Describe your book ‘Collateral Damage (Annie Ogden Mysteries)’ in 30 words or less.

Collateral Damage is an intense mystery about a veteran who's finding her life back in normal society hard to adjust to. As if navigating a complex love triangle wasn't enough, now Annie Ogden's on the run from a killer out to get her! Once you start this one, you won't be able to put it down.

3. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

I couldn't stand to see Annie making such lousy choices, but I couldn't stand in her way either. I felt very conflicted letting her do some of the crazy things she did.

4. What books have had the greatest influence on you?

I loved the humor in Carl Hiaasen's books, Nature Girl and Skinny Dip, among others. These books showed me there must be a place on the shelf for mysteries that contain absurdist humor and an original storyline.

5. Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

I try to eschew marketing activities in a direct way, but I greatly enjoy hearing from readers who have enjoyed my books. My email address can be found on my website at http://www.frederickleebrooke.com.

6. How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

Thinking about what I'm going to write? No, just kidding … well, I try to spend quality time with my partner, who is also my muse and mojo. And reading.

7. What are you working on next?

A new dystopian series set in the United States in 2021. Book 1 of the new series will come out in November 2013.
