I am a woman on fire with purpose. The cause most near and dear to my heart is child abuse awareness, a cause with which I am intimately acquainted from my time in the British foster care system. At the hands of the Laurence family, my twin David and I endured the most brutal abuse on a daily basis—physical, mental, and sexual abuse. My memoir covers our horrific childhood and the failings of the child protective services. The goal is to bring awareness to child abuse by detailing my stomach-turning experiences. As disturbing as the recollection is, I seek to open people’s eyes to how hellish it is in hopes of converting readers’ outrage to action.. While my abuse was an isolating experience, I was not alone: my twin, David, suffered alongside me. There is a thread of hope throughout the novel demonstrated through the love we shared for one another. We kept each other going, and the novel juxtaposes the evil of our foster mother with the adoration my sibling and I had for one another. We kept each other going. In addition, my experiences reveal the fault of the foster care system. There were so many red flags that the social worker failed to inquire about further. It is a cautionary tale to social workers and to people who might suspect child abuse but fail to act upon it. Finally, and most importantly, my tale is a spiritual one. It is clear to me that God was present throughout the torturous years of my youth. Without having gained formal education on religion or the nature of God, I knew Him deeply. I saw His hand in my life as he guided me out of the hellhole in which my twin and I lived. Thus this is a spiritual tale of faith and fight. I am a mother and a wife now and have found an endless love through my little family whom I adore and treasure with my life. xxx

Interview

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I was born in London, England along with my twin brother David who is eight minuets older than I.   My twin David and I did not have what you would call a “bed of roses” childhood. We endured the worst kind of physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. At the age of fourteen we managed to escape our prison and go on to find freedom with hurdles along the way.  Now much older I am a woman on fire with purpose. The cause most near and dear to my heart is child abuse awareness, a cause with which of course I am intimately acquainted from my time in the British foster care system.  I am happily married with a beautiful seven year old daughter who brings so much sunshine to my life.  I am a devoted mother to my little girl and yes maybe a little protective.  I am also a huge animal lover and have the same beliefs that they also only deserve to be loved and not harmed.  I go through life with LOVE in my heart as I feel that hatred and cruelty is a disease that will not only destroy you but will also destroy others around you.  It is so much more rewarding to help your fellow man than to reject him.

2. Describe your book Surviving the Devil in 30 words or less.

Surviving the Devil-An Account of Adoption and Abuse is a true story of Faith and Fight, twins who live in a house with no Love, no family, no affection, they fight everyday to stay alive but with an undying devotion and love for each other that only Christ has his hands in.

3. What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Because David and I  had such a horrific childhood the imagery is graphic and the language is mature at times.  It is not simply to be gratuitous, however, because the purpose is to educate the masses on just how awful our childhood abuse was.  I thought there is no use in skimming over the grisly details if it will fuel people to stand against child abuse and see reality. Some people do not know how bad child abuse can be. As difficult as it is was to write and recall I had to also remember the spiritual motifs it contains and my journey in faith but most importantly the cause of child abuse awareness I am trying to reach.  That all being said writing the book caused me a lot of stress and heart ache, however, I would go through the agony again for the purpose of my cause.

4. What books have had the greatest influence on you?

Books that have influenced me: Gifts of Imperfection-Brene Brown, The power of Vulnerabiliity-Brene Brown, The Wounded Heart-Dan Allender, Healing from Depression, Anxiety Panic & PTSD-Vickie Buchanan

5. Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

I hold a lot of book signings that I set up myself.  I have a Face Book Page name Surviving The Devil-An Account of Adoption and Abuse, America's Registry Outstanding Professionals, Strathmore's Who's Who, Twitter, News articles, TV (News Media).

6. How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

I am a very ambitious gardener, I like to grow all my own fruit and vegetables.  I enjoy spending time with my little girl and husband and of course animals.  I do a lot of fund raising work and am in the middle of setting up a Non-Profit to benefit Children of Abuse and Children's Homes for Abused Children.  I also get invited to speak at schools and Children Homes.  Teachers and Social Workers invite me to speak because they see that I use a bad experience as a positive one.  We cannot let our perpetrators steal the rest of our life as they have already taken too much of it already.

7. What are you working on next?

I am presently working on another book about Life after Abuse.  It details how yes there are struggles after years of abuse and non of us are robots but we do not  have to let the past define us, " there can be a beautiful life after Abuse"
