Interview

Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

A professional film critic for over 50 years, I've also written the "Merryll Manning" series of mystery novels and a handbook on "Write Ways to Win Writing Contests". Currently I'm the Chief Judge for three of America's largest writing competitions.

Describe your book ‘Mystery, Suspense, Film Noir and Detective Movies on DVD: A Guide to the Best in Cinema Thrills’ in 30 words or less.

An essential handbook for all classic movie fans, this book provides an all-you-need-to-know guide to over 700 interesting DVDs currently available to rent or buy.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?

Checking the credits! Sometimes the information in the credit titles of the film itself differed from what was printed in the Press Book, and both were often at variance with the details provided by various internet sites.

What books have had the greatest influence on you?

All the many books by Leonard Maltin and Roger Ebert, but most particularly the "Film Review" annuals by F. Maurice Speed.

Briefly share with us what you do to market your book?

The first thing I do is to send out hardcover copies to all the reviewers and then to see that their reviews are given the widest circulation possible.

How do you spend your time when you are not writing?

When I'm not writing or watching, I'm working on my model railroad or jaunting around the countryside.

What are you working on next?

"Silent Movies & Early Sound Films on DVD: New Expanded Edition".
