Description

Dramatic and epic, "Daniel's Garden" is an adventurous coming-of-age story about an unlikely soldier. As the son of a prominent Boston family, Daniel Stuart's destiny lies along an educated path. But he shocks all by dropping out of Harvard to join a ragtag group of abolitionists - and they go to war. Follow Daniel and his comrades into the trenches and fields of some of the Civil War's bloodiest battles: Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. At times funny, poignant, and heartbreaking, "Daniel's Garden" shows that while freedom is worth dying for, love is worth living for.

I had so many moments of synchronicity writing this story - finding the perfect home for Daniel on Boston's Beacon Hill, reading actual diaries from the 11th Massachusetts, and walking on the battlefields during a trip in August 2002. It was an incredible journey.

"All of us have a "garden", a place of refuge even if it's in our fantasies only. Did Daniel leave that place or take it with him? Did it serve him well or haunt him? To anyone that has ever longed to set their own course and march to the beat of their own drum, regardless of the consequences, this book is for you."
