The story of Sonja Brooks, a Civil War widow who’s bitten and turned into a werewolf continues in Waking Up Dead. She saves a Rebel solider, Tyler Loflin from dying and inadvertently changes him into a werewolf with the sharing of her blood. Yankee vampires attack, planning to kidnap Sonja, because her blood allows them to walk in the light. Sonja and Ty escape, using a wagon train of refugees headed west as cover. Along with retreating Rebel soldiers and Sonja’s family, they leave Pennsylvania, venturing into unknown territory where life has teeth. There are hard lessons for both new wolfs from the witch, Hortence, the wolf god, Guardian and a new ally, the vampire, Major General Jeb Stewart. Sonja struggles while learning to manage these lessons and her werewolf instincts. She pushes Ty away, deciding her mate is safer apart from her. Little does she know the move will place her in mortal risk. Loving Sonja is as natural as breathing for Ty, even with her objections. He vows to protect his woman and the train no matter what. However, fate has a lesson or two of its own for both werewolves.

I really like this series. I think part of it is the setting being during the Civil War. Also the vampires are the bad guys in this so that is also a little change up from other books.

Let me start with the villain first. It is revealed at the end of the story just who is behind the vampire attacks in this story. I was very surprised and was not expecting it to be who it was. Not spoiling it for you though! I did like that the vampires were hard to kill. It just made it seem more authentic to me because they are already dead and shouldn't be easily killed in a fight with awerewolf.

There wasn't quite as much romance and sex in this story as there was in the first one because of the circumstances present in the story but there was still enough. I like that they had General Jeb Stewart back in this story as well as Sonja's sister was also in it a lot more.

I did have some problems with this story at times though. It seemed like it jumped around a little bit and it made me get confusedand had to re-read it in a couple spots. Also I thought that Sonja was more cross with Ty more often than what she needed however I also know she was frustrated but it made me want to shake her at times. She was determined to show that she could do everything that Ty could do and refused to ask for help.

Even though it still had a couple things that confused me I feel it still deserves a four star review because I feel the plot itself was even better that the last book and that action and adventure was also better. I will continue to read this series. I like where it is going.

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review.*

I enjoyed reading about Ty and Sonja and their adventures as Werewolfs in combat with the evil Vampires. They have recently been changed and are still learning their powers. Sonja has a special bloodline that the Vampires want in order to provide them with extra protection.
The story takes place during the War between the States with a character whose historical name you will recognize
Definitely 5 stars from me! History, Romance and Paranormal!

A wonderful Paranormal Historical Romance. I enjoyed reading this great book which is situated in the 1860's during the time of the war. Ty and Sonja are both new to the life of Werewolves. They are learning the extent of their powers and how to control them. They are making their way to Texas with family, friends and strangers. They are being pursued by vampires dedicated to their destruction. A great read. I enjoyed it immensely!
