The Story Behind This Book
Novelist D. K. Christi was enjoying a serene walk along the boardwalk at Blair Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary on her birthday in 2007 when she learned of a rare and exciting event that had just happened: the rare and endangered ghost orchid had bloomed just off the boardwalk, high in the cypress canopy, the only such plant in the entire sanctuary. It's so rare, it's only found in the Everglades of Florida and parts of Cuba. Once she looked through the scope at this exquisitely beautiful, exotic flower, floating like Chinese rice paper ghosts in the swamp breeze, unfettered by even one leaf along the slender stem, she was obsessed. The blooming took on super hero proportions as the plant bloomed higher, closer to easy view and with more blooms than any ghost orchid on record. Her obsession was recorded by the local newspaper as she watched its daily changes over a three-month period of time, also observing the diverse visitors whose gaze also reached the top of the canopy where the ghost orchid reigned.
