Description

The true story of a young couple who meet, fall in love, and become engaged during the uncertain days of World War II, “Cal & Jo” is based on 85 letters written in the early and mid-1940s by Cal when he was in training, overseas, and back home again.

From very different backgrounds, their relationship faces seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and Cal’s letters lovingly express how deeply he misses Jo. He has no idea when he will see her again, and plans for marriage give him hope and purpose throughout the war. Yet his dream is unexpectedly shattered when he finally returns. This story is a remarkable display of resolute determination in the face of grim historic events and a parade of personal challenges.

Providing stirring inspiration and uplifting encouragement, Cal and Jo are two ordinary people whose relationship does not have an easy start, yet who choose to be together through one of history’s darkest hours.

Shortly after my dad passed away, my mom asked if I'd like to read the letters he wrote her during WW2. I didn't know these letters existed, and was captivated reading them. They inspired me to write this book, which includes many excerpts from his letters. This book chronicles my parents' courtship during the war years, and the many difficult obstacles they faced both personally as well as from the war. It also includes my dad's perspective on serving in Europe as a photo interpreter in the 3rd Army under General Patton. I came to appreciate how he overcame so many mountains to finally marry my mother, and realize even more what remarkable man he was. I hope you too will be inspired by this story.
