I had had a very long day and was tired, weary, and worn out from continuously having to fight spiritually and mentally. I turned to my dad and said, “One day, I’m going to write a book about this stuff.” At the time I was kidding around, but I made that statement based on reflecting back in disbelief about my entire experience at the University of Delaware from the time I arrived on campus until that very day. After my dad left to go back to Philadelphia, I began preparing for bed. As soon as I fell asleep that night I had an encounter with God in a vision that terrified me. In Job 4:12-16, the Bible says, “Now a word was secretly brought to me, And my ears received a whisper of it. In disquieting thoughts from the visions of night, When deep sleep falls on men, Fear came upon me, and trembling, Which made all my bones shake. Then a spirit passed before my face; The hair on my body stood up. It stood still, But I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; There was silence; Then I heard a voice.” The vision started out in my dorm room, and the exact way that my room was set up in real life was the way it appeared in the vision. In the vision, while lying in bed asleep, I was awakened by fear and shortness of breath as my stomach began to tighten. I felt myself descending downward. The feeling was comparable to being on an elevator going from the top floor of a tall building all the way down to the bottom floor, only faster. Just as an elevator would, my bed seemed to land softly on the ground as it came to a stop. Once I stopped descending, I was terrified by a horrifying presence. The presence was so frightening and horrifying that I stayed under the covers as if to be able to hide. The presence surrounding me felt like death and like I was about to die but could not. I was so terrified that I started crying and was literally shaking with fear. I peeked out from under the covers and I saw large orange fiery flames surrounding my bed in a perfect full circle as my bed was positioned in the middle of a valley. I could only vaguely see beyond the flames, because the flames were very large and past my direct line of vision. Trying to see what was beyond the flames, I just saw the fumes from the fire that made whatever was behind the flames very blurry. The color of the background was pitch black with the only light being provided by the flames that surrounded my bed. I quickly pulled the covers back over my head again and continued crying, shaking, and shivering with fear. Besides the feeling of horror, terror, and indescribable fear, seeing the large orange flames and the fumes that permeated from them, I felt extreme heat. I realized that God had taken my bed out of my dorm room and placed it in hell—in my vision, I was in hell. The interesting thing in all of this was that even though I was experiencing these characteristics of hell, I felt in my heart that these were not the only ones, even though I did not see anything else. A great part of the sense of fear that I was experiencing was the anticipation of the unexpected and the unknown. I knew something else was out there—I just didn’t know what. It brought immense fear over me to know that I could be harmed. On the other hand, I also felt protected. It seemed like nothing could come past the perfect full circle of fire that surrounded my bed. I also felt in my heart that in a sense, I was not experiencing these aspects of hell to the highest degree. Despite what I was experiencing, I knew for some odd reason that God’s presence was there with me as I was lying in bed frightened under those covers. It was almost as if God wanted me to know that he was there with me but at the same time he pulled back his presence to an extent. He wanted to allow me to experience some of what it felt like to be tormented in hell so I would know that it was really real. I know it was not God’s presence that caused me to be so horrified “for God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (2 Tim. 1:7). The only fear that God’s presence invokes is the type of fear which is reverence or holy fear. To add to this, “In Your presence is the fullness of joy” (Ps. 16:11). In fact, when we come into God’s presence, the first thing that it makes us want to do is fall down and worship him. What I was experiencing was far from having power because I felt powerless and hopeless in my surroundings. And it was far from feeling love and having a sound mind because I was so terrified. I definitely did not feel the fullness of joy but rather the fullness of fear and horror and this certainly did not make me want to worship but weep. Some people may have a problem with God’s presence being in hell with me because hell is separation from God, and his presence is not there. However, God being God, he promises his children, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb. 13:5). Even though I was in hell, I still knew for certain that I was a child of God and that the omnipresent God was still with me as I laid in my bed frightened almost to death. I knew right then and there that there was nowhere I could go as a believer that the presence of God would not be with me. Psalm 139:8-10 assured me of this. “If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there, If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And your right hand shall hold me.” In the gospel of Matthew I was given further assurance, “and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (10:28). In my vision, a voice began speaking that sounded like rushing water, yet it was quiet and calm. The voice sounded like thousands of people speaking at the same time, synchronized and on cue, like a choir without missing a note. The voice said, “Whatever you do, don’t ever give up because that’s what the Devil wants you to do.” I knew without question that this was the voice of God. I had been going through so much persecution with my coach, and with the way I was treated at the Delaware State game being the last straw, I was contemplating leaving school and going back home and taking a year off to rest from being so spiritually weary. The other reason I knew that this was the voice of God is because the Devil would never tell me not to give up. Giving up is what the Enemy wants us to do. Jesus even told us in his Word, that every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand (Matt. 12:25). So with full assurance of who it was, I responded while still under the covers and said, “I’m not going to give up. I’m just resting, that’s all.” And then the voice said, “Oh yeah, and one more thing…” I was so anxious to hear what the one more thing was that God wanted to tell me that I snapped out of the vision and woke up.

"This book by Minister Kevin takes me back to my childhood when I found out about hell and how the fear of going there, led me to take the walk down the aisle to give my heart to the Lord. I'm sure that reading this book will have the same influence on anyone who isn't aware of the punishment for anyone who hasn't given their heart to our Savior. The book was amazing, bottom line; this book is a life-changer. I love the cover, It should create a great deal of interest. I think you've got a big-seller there that's sure to be a blessing to many."

"Over the years in book publishing, I have worked on many books signaling the end of the world and accounting for the ultimate destiny of humankind.  Many of these books have been effective in detailing the coming days of both prosperity and disasters of epic portion.  Few of them, however, have been as fascinating, poignant, and instructional as Minister Kevin Benton's 'A Field Trip to Hell.'  This book is a great tool for those needing a practical way to inform unbelievers (and even believers) of the realities of hell, and a practical way of witnessing to them.  God has not given us a spirit of fear, but we should all have a proper fear of going to hell."

"After reading the chapter in the book that takes readers on the actual Field Trip to Hell, I must admit that I have never read anything quite like it. There is a nearly universal curiosity or fascination about hell that will attract a wide range of media attention. This attraction stretches across Christian and non-Christian audiences. It was one of a kind and I hope it ends up on the best-sellers list."
